How my journey began

I have been teaching now for almost 30 years and what has always struck me was the clear difference between students who were going to achieve their learning aims and those who were going to be left behind.

And, being the caring pedagoge that I am I always wondered, “What can I do to help those who are struggling?”

I currently work in a Further Education College in West London. I teach adults as well as the 16 – 18 year olds on vocational courses.

The statistics regarding learner pass rates are alarming: just under 20% of our 16 – 18 cohort are going to fail their vocational and additional learning courses this year.

In financial terms this is almost three quarters of a billion pounds, squandered for no particular reason.

Learning about this and experiencing the pain and anguish my students face in their studies, I became determined to make a change; a change in the learning culture that takes place in my classes and a determination to find the means, methodology, processes and procedures that will help that 20% become more effective learners.

Joseph Ascot is a company I started with these intentions in mind. So far I have met some wonderful teachers, observed some outstanding teaching and learning take place in classrooms, have experimented with different educational tools including technical ones such as the Google for Education Suite of apps and all in all, it’s been a heck of a learning curve and an exciting journey.

So here is my shout out to all of you: whether you are teachers, learners, parents or just the damn curious; let us join together and discuss what really matters; effective learning for all who want to learn or really, need to learn.
